... took place this past Saturday night at the Golden Spur Saloon in Magdalena, New Mexico.

Hard rock and roll with Rob Lopez and his merry band of musicians, 7216 ft. high up in the thin, crisp air of the Magdalena Mountains, where they played underneath the genuine trophy deer and antelope heads mounted on the walls.

I'm not sure it gets any more Rock & Roll then that.

Somehow along the line this massive old cottonwood tree (150+ ft.) developed a large enough natural cavity in it's trunk so that a person can now comfortably stand inside it. I know because I've done it many times myself. It's great for getting out of the elements (not recommended for lightning storms) or for just leaning back in and contemplating the universe while the sun sets. Cottonwood leaves make a great sound in the wind and of couse the birds are always flitting about it's branches. It's a cool old tree to hang out with/in.

As you can see, from just the right angle, it appears that this ancient cottonwood is walking... more likely running. Heading for the hills. Well, probably towards the river actually and the relative safety of the protected Rio Grande Bosque and the cottonwoods there.

I'd be running too, if I knew about the fate of most of my other brethren of this area... and thus ultimately mine also.

Sadly, it's one of the last of many cottonwoods that use to populate this middle Rio Grande flood plain that's now been almost completely cleared for agriculture.

I hope whatever it appears to be trying to get away from never catches it.

Ghost Hoops

I used to play on this basketball court a lot with family and friends back in the day, so it brings back a lot memories to see it now... years later.

I can hear the distant echo of sounds and see the faint images of past contests and people as I look at these pictures.

Like watching a game of hoops with ghosts.

The Zia Vortex is a rare, naturally occurring phenomenon here in the "Land of Enchantment", that can suddenly arise out of nowhere and at anytime. If you're not careful it'll suck you into another dimension. Kind of like the Bermuda Triangle.

Crystal Starship Sighting ?

(First off, no, I'm not a trekkie)

So, there I was, up close and personal with a fine crystal serving dish and the macro lens of my camera.

As I dove in and went deep I saw a image appear that reminded me of the Starship Enterprise going light speed. Intrigued, I followed it firing off these pix.

And then it was gone.

Sunday (9/13/9) I came across a classic 60's era Pontiac GTO with it's massive chrome front grille from a bygone era and suddenly the day turned all Salvador Dali -ish on me.

I had so much fun shooting the chrome of the old GTO that I decided to finish up with the chrome of a 21st century Ford Fusion.

The Rio Puerco Bridge at Bernardo, NM, is located about 50 miles south of Albuquerque or about 30 miles north of Socorro just off of I-25. Go west at the Bernardo exit about 1 mile.

Can't miss it. Really.

As I'm shooting this series of photos I'm thinking, all I need is a DeLorean like the one in the "Back to the Future" movies to come roaring across the bridge from one dimension into another. Instead, I get a friendly vato puttering along in his old beat up red Toyota pickup, trying to get home before the storm hits. I took the picture but was a little bummed out at first until I looked at this particular photo later and realized how well the light flames of the sunset blended with the silhouette of his truck.

Perfectomundo.

I just figured it had to be some of that old New Mexico magic mojo at play. In this case covered in a red secret sauce paint job.

It works for me.

A late afternoon storm had just moved through and the sun was going down. The perfect combination for some pictures.

It is all very beautiful and magical here - a quality which cannot be described. You have to live it and breathe it, let the sun bake into you. The skies and the lands are so enormous, and the detail so precise and exquisite that wherever you are you are isolated into a glowing world between the macro and the micro, where everything is sidewise under you and over you, and the clocks stopped long ago.

On most evenings around here the backroad between Escondido, NM and the EMRTC facility offers up a nightly light show at sunset...

Great cloud formations...

"M" Mountain (7,243 ft.), which overlooks Socorro, NM offers a great backdrop for sunsets...

Even the Ladron Mountains (9210 ft.) 30 miles to the north can be seen in the distance from this backroad....

So, if you're ever passing through Socorro, NM in the evening hours, take the Escondido exit off I-25 then head west....

...and enjoy the show.

Although I try to stay out of "Burque" as much as possible, if forced to go, it never fails to offer up plenty of photographic delights.

Albuquerque. I take the Central Avenue exit, the old road, the traditional thoroughfare through what was once -- long ago -- the heart of the city. Trying hard to work up a twinge of nostalgia. Hard work, for the city that I loved has disappeared.
